Denver, CO - Vice President Dick Cheney is in Colorado today for a fundraiser for Congresswoman Marilyn Musgrave.
In February the GOP named the "10 Most At-Risk" Republicans in Congress. Both Marilyn Musgrave and Bob Beauprez made the list. With Beauprez eyeing the Governor's race, Republicans are focusing on Congresswoman Musgrave.
The "10 Most At-Risk" list represents who the GOP leaders think need the most help during the next election cycle. Since Musgrave is on the list she will benefit from the GOP Retain Our Majority Program (ROMP).
"Musgrave has a very conservative voting record in Congress which alienates a large percentage of her constituents," said Pat Waak, Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party. "She is vulnerable because her conservative agenda does not resonate with the people in the district."
House Majority Tom Delay (R-Texas) designed ROMP in 1999 to funnel money from legislators who have safe seats to those who represent competitive seats. Each ROMP beneficiary will receive an estimated $100,000 from each event that is held.
Cheney's visit is a clear indication that the Republican Party believes a competitive race is in the future for Musgrave. The 4th Congressional District would be a potential gain for Democrats in Colorado who have the momentum from statewide victories in 2004.
Although 41% of the registered voters in the 4th Congressional District are Republican, this is not a safe Republican district. There is a strong Democratic and Unaffiliated voting population throughout the district. In fact, unaffiliated voters represent 33% of the voting population.
"Democrats across the state strongly believe that the 4th Congressional District could be ours in 2006," said Waak.
