July 20, 2005 Denver, CO – Last night President Bush announced his nomination of John Roberts to the Supreme Court. Colorado Democratic Party Chair Pat Waak released the following statement on the nomination:

"Justice O"Connor was an influential figure during her time on the US Supreme Court. The Senate must thoroughly review the record of John Roberts to ensure that he can live up the precedent set by Justice O"Connor, of utter respect for the rights and freedoms of all Americans."

"Our US Senators have a constitutional duty to carefully consider all nominees. Since Roberts has the potential of serving for more than thirty years, it is critical that Democratic Senators take adequate time in evaluating Roberts legal credentials and his willingness to submit judgments without conflict of personal interest."
