Poll: Most Americans Believe that Republicans Are Leading America Down the Wrong Track PDF Print E-mail

Denver, CO - A poll released Monday by CBS News shows that a majority of Americans believe America is on the wrong track. The poll was conducted among a nationwide sample of adults from April 13, 2005-April 16, 2005.

According to the CBS poll 62% of Americans believe that America has seriously gotten off on the wrong track. It is very rare for this poll question to show such an overwhelming opinion among Americans that America has lost focus and no longer seems to be going in the right direction.

"It is clear that Americans are responding to the failed leadership of the Republican Party. While Republicans are focusing on their conservative agendas, critical domestic issues are being neglected," said Pat Waak, Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party.

"Americans are concerned about issues that impact their daily lives. Americans want the government to address issues like health care costs, job security, the ongoing war in Iraq, and the rising price of gas," said Joelle Martinez, Communications Director of the Colorado Democratic Party.

This poll shows that Americans do not feel that President Bush and the Republicans in Congress are doing a good job addressing these important issues.

Bush now has a disapproval rating of 51%. Polls show that each month President Bush's approval rating drops an average of 1.5 points.

A closer look at President Bush's dismal approval rating shows a dramatic change in public opinion on his handling of the war in Iraq and the economy. At the beginning of the year 45% of Americans approved of the President's handling of the war in Iraq. That approval rating has dropped 6 points over the last two months. On the issue of the economy, Americans give the President a meager approval rating of 34%. That represents a decrease of 4 points over the last two months.

The poll showed that 41% of Americans believe that the recent actions of the Republican controlled Congress are bad for the country. 6 out of 10 people in America have a negative opinion about Republicans in Congress. The current negativity about the Congress stems from inaction on important issues like health care and the rising cost of gas.

With the average cost of gas well over $2 per gallon, a majority of Americans report being adversely affected. 63% of those polled said that the rise in gas prices affects has had a dramatic impact on their lives. Those most impacted by the rising cost of gas prices are people between 18-29 earning less than $30,000 a year.

"Republicans are not getting the job done. It is time for Americans to begin to think about a change in representation. The dissatisfaction about the government is no longer just a partisan issue; it is an issue for all Americans," said Pat Waak. "I know that Democrats can do better. It is the party's goal to work hard over the next 19 months to get Democrats elected so that America can get back on the right track."
