Lack of Democracy in the Republican Party PDF Print E-mail

Republicans persist in being the party where only the elite matter. On the state level, the Republican Chair and 31 legislators asked Marc Holtzman to 'step-aside' for his run for Governor instead of allowing voters to choose in an August primary. The Denver Post has said that it is wrong to push a favorite, when Colorado voters have a long history of picking statewide candidates from a primary.

"This is one more example of the Colorado Republican party promoting special interest politics. The only party that matters in the Colorado GOP is the Trailhead party, the mudslinging arm of the state party in 2006." Says Colorado Democratic Party Chair, Pat Waak.

Nationally, Leader Dennis Hastert has called for a 'majority of the majority' on the immigration reform bill. It appears that Rep. Hastert does not believe in 50% plus one when it comes to voting on consensus immigration legislation.

Hastert is insisting that if the Republicans in the House, the majority, do not support the bill by a majority of that majority, then all the work being done by the Senate to pass a reasonable solution to immigration reform that calls for border security and a path to citizenship for certain undocumented immigrants is for naught.

"American's want results, and Congressman Hastert should stop playing and politicizing this issue just to get his way." says Ramona Martinez, DNC Committeewoman and Vice-Chair of the DNC Hispanic Caucus.

"This is just one more example of the obstructionist members of the Republican Party. If they can't have it the way they want it, they block it or shove it out of the way," adds Chairwoman Waak. "These are two more reasons for the voters of Colorado to ask themselves if they have had enough of the Republicans and donate, vote and volunteer for the Democrats this year."
