If you want something accomplished in Colorado, ask Democrats to do it.
That's increasingly the conclusion of political leaders, community leaders,
business leaders and other Coloradans and it was proven once again during the
legislature's special session on immigration.
Before the special session began, Governor Owens worked with Democrats to draft
a call broad enough to craft a comprehensive immigration policy.
During the five-day session, the governor's office and Democrats debated ideas,
looked at legislation in other states and developed the most secure and practical
immigration policy in the nation.
"Democrats and the governor showed that bipartisan cooperation leads to
good policy," said Democratic Party Chair Pat Waak.
In the end, after spending most of the session squabbling among themselves,
many Republicans in the legislature saw the sense in the package of legislation
and voted for it.
"It's unfortunate that some Republicans are too partisan and too political
to work with even the governor on good policy," Waak said. "We're
happy to take our record on immigration, Referendum C, health care, jobs and
other issues to the voters during this campaign.
"Our team in the legislature has proven over and over that they can work with
willing Republicans, business leaders and all Coloradans to do what's best for
the state," she added.
