Beauprez Should Apologize for Disparaging Remarks Against African Americans PDF Print E-mail

DENVER – Today, the Colorado Democratic Party called on Bob Beauprez to apologize for erroneous and malicious comments regarding the African American community.

In the August 28th broadcast of KCFR's Colorado Matters, Beauprez mistakenly asserted that abortions reach numbers "as high as 70 percent, maybe even more, in the African-American community that I think is just appalling."

CDP Chairwoman Pat Waak issued a statement in response to Beauprez's comments:

"From veterans to Hispanics to African Americans, Bob Beauprez has gone out of his way to publicly offend diverse groups in our community. His latest comment is a despicable and careless attack on African American families in our state. Not only is his statement offensive, but the public deserves to see the data he is quoting.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, a leading research organization, Colorado has a fairly low number of abortions in all ethnic communities.

Beauprez has proven he is reckless with facts and has no shame in relying on misrepresentation to bolster his floundering campaign. His desperation has made him careless. Coloradans are right to question whether such a careless individual is to lead our state as its governor. Who will Congressman Beauprez offend next?"

The Guttmacher study is available at www.guttmacher.org.

This attack from Bob Beauprez and his campaign is the latest in a string of disparaging comments that have offended diverse Colorado communities including veterans, Hispanics, and gays and lesbians.

Other Beauprez incidents involving diverse Colorado communities include:

June 2005- Beauprez comments to a Colorado newspaper, "I've vacationed in Mexico before. I know exactly what 'Mexican time ' is" regarding bi-national efforts to extradite a suspected cop killer.

August 2006 – Beauprez announces Janet Rowland as running mate. Immediately, it is revealed Rowland publicly compared homosexuality to bestiality in a television discussion on civil unions. Beauprez is called upon to remove Rowland from the ticket and refuses.

August 2006 – In an interview with Colorado Public Radio, Beauprez is asked about not serving in Vietnam and comments, ""No, I don't know that there were a great many people who wanted to serve then. Claudia and I had just gotten married. I actually got the notice before our wedding and the physical was the week after we got back from our four-day honeymoon. And I very much wanted to get on with my life. So no, I wasn't crushed that I wasn't called up."
