Rubberstamp Ricky fires cheap shots in attempt to hide his scary Social
Security past
DENVER- It's almost becoming like a scene from that Bill Murrray classic Groundhog
Day. Another day, another desperate attack from Republican Rick O'Donnell. Why
all the tap dancing? It's an effort to disguise his position on the future of
Social Security.
In 1995, when he was a brash twenty-four year old, O'Donnell called for the
dismantling of Social Security, calling it "un-American". Now that
Colorado voters know the truth, there's nothing left to do but run and hide
from his position.
These days, O'Donnell admits on his website (http://www.rickodonnell.com/socialsecurity.php):
"In fact, when I was just 24 years old, I studied the problems facing
Social Security and suggested one way (not a very good one, it turns
out) to increase retirement savings..."
And what was this "not a very good" idea?
From his own words:
"There is an even more important moral question raised by the government's
role as chief provider in old age. It sends the un-American message that it
is not your responsibility to take care of yourself."
But even today, eleven years after his regrettable statements, Rick O'Donnell
continues to advocate for the elimination of Social Security, sounding like
a wolf in sheep's clothing.
From his website:
"We must protect our retirement by putting our Social Security where workers
can watch it grow - in their own personal Social Security lockbox
- and Congress can't spend it."
Hmmm...that sounds familiar. A "lockbox". But put the word "personal"
in front of it and it becomes an idea that sounds hauntingly like the "privatized
personal savings accounts" pushed by Rick's good friend - George W. Bush.
The truth is, Rick O'Donnell can stand in front of Ed Perlmutter's place of
employment from here until Election Day. He can demand in vain that Perlmutter
release confidential client lists in spite of attorney –client privilige.
He can continue to avoid questions that paint him as the right-wing reactionary
he truly is.
But he can't run and hide from the fact that cheap stunts and hubris can only
carry you so far. Sooner or later, Rick O'Donnell is going to have to face the
music. And stealing Democratic buzzwords just won't cut it.
Colorado families deserve better.
