If Beauprez really cares about accountability, he should
hold his leaders accountable
Denver -- On Friday, Congressman Mark Foley (R-FL) resigned from the House
of Representatives after reports surfaced of sexually explicit e-mails and text
messages he sent to underage House pages. It was subsequently revealed that
House leaders, including House Speaker Dennis Hastert, had known of inappropriate
contact between Rep. Foley and House pages and took no action against him.
The Colorado Democratic Party calls on Congressman Bob Beauprez and the other
Republican members of the Colorado delegation to denounce the actions of their
leadership.
"If Bob Beauprez really cares about accountability, he will hold the
Republican leadership accountable for their inaction against Mark Foley,"
said Colorado State Democratic Party Chair Pat Waak. "The children who
serve as congressional pages should not have to ward off sexual advances from
members of Congress. Furthermore, they should have confidence that the House
leadership will protect them if such advances occur.
"Anyone who willfully disregards potential threats to children is not
worthy of a position of leadership in the House of Representatives. I assume
Congressman Beauprez agrees with this sentiment. It's time for him to say so."
Jay Fawcett, candidate for Congress in Colorado's 5th congressional district,
invited his opponent to join him in calling for an investigation into this matter
as well.
