Denver, Colorado - Pat Waak, Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party, today
issued a formal request to her counterpart, Dick Wadhams, to publicly denounce
statements made by Ann Coulter last weekend. Ms. Coulter used pejorative terms
to describe former Senator John Edwards at the meeting of the Conservative Political
Action Committee.
In a letter to the Colorado Republican Chair, Waak said, "By joining us
in denouncing Ms. Coulter's remarks and her pattern of hate speech, you will
send a clear message that Republicans and Democrats in Colorado stand together
against bigotry and hatred."
"We ask that you issue an immediate public denunciation of Ms. Coulter's
statements, and commit to not inviting her to any official Colorado Republican
Party function until she issues a sincere apology for the remarks. Showing such
leadership will confirm the high expectations your party, and all Coloradans,
have for a new spirit of tolerance and acceptance among leaders of the Colorado
Republican Party."

Attn: Dick Wadhams, Chair

Dear Dick:
Ann Coulter's hateful and reviling remarks at last weekend's Conservative
Political Action Committee (CPAC) meeting brought a new low to American political
discourse. While some attendees at that meeting seemingly applauded Ms. Coulter's
remarks, the three leading Republican presidential candidates were quick to
denounce her bigotry. We are writing to ask the Republican Party leadership
of Colorado to follow the lead of your party's presidential candidates and
issue an immediate denouncement of Ms. Coulter and her particular brand of
hatred.
The use of bigoted, pejorative terms to describe people is part of Ms. Coulter's
standard procedure. Few groups have escaped her vitriol, even the widows of
the fallen heroes of 9/11. This latest outburst by Ms. Coulter, however, gives
all of us the opportunity to take action that may lead toward either a change
in her conduct or an evaporation of public speaking opportunities in which
she can spread her poison.
By joining us in denouncing Ms. Coulter's remarks and her pattern of hate
speech, you will send a clear message that Republicans and Democrats in Colorado
stand together against bigotry and prejudice. None of us, regardless of party,
should tolerate political speech that denigrates people and perpetuates prejudice.
Together, we can take a stand against Ms. Coulter and her ilk, who respect
little other than advancing their own careers and egos.
We ask that you issue an immediate public denunciation of Ms. Coulter's statements,
and commit to not inviting her to any official Colorado Republican Party function
until she issues a sincere apology for her remarks. Showing such leadership
will confirm the high expectations your party, and all Coloradans, have for
a new spirit of tolerance and acceptance among leaders of the Colorado Republican
Party.
I thank you for your consideration and look forward to future opportunities
where we may come together for the benefit of all Coloradans.
Sincerely,
Pat Waak, Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party
