DENVER - A jubilant crowd faced a chilly moorning outside the Capitol Tuesday
to celebrate a step forward in the fight to save the lives of infants. The Junior
League of Denver and the Colorado Safe Haven for Newborns Project joined First
Lady Jeannie Ritter, Representative Jim Riesberg (D-Greeley) and Senator Suzanne
Williams (D-Aurora) to commemorate April 3rd as "Safe Haven for Newborns
Day."
Proclaimed by Senate Joint Resolution 29, "Safe Haven for Newborns Day"
will promote awareness of the Safe Haven Law. This law allows women and couples
to surrender a newborn child to a designated "Safe Haven" without
fear of criminal charges.
Since 2000, fifteen newborns have been saved through the use of Safe Havens.
"That is fifteen children who, instead of dying, now have a chance to grow,
to be loved; to have a family and a real life," said Senator Williams.
In this Podcast, Senator Williams talks about the importance of the Safe Haven
Law and the need to increase awareness among high school and college-age women
and couples.
