CDP Chair Calls Coffman Response Inadequate PDF Print E-mail

Denver - Colorado Democratic Party Chair Pat Waak today called Secretary of State Mike Coffman's response to the revelation of partisan conduct by an employee inadequate, saying Coffman has still failed to address the fundamental problem.

Dan Kopelman, Elections Technology Manager for the Secretary of State, had been running a "side business" called Political Live Wires which sold voter data and other campaign services to Republican candidates.

Reports today stated that Kopelman's salary has been reduced and that he has been prohibited from engaging in any outside business without permission.

"Mike Coffman seems to be more concerned about appearing to do the right thing than about actually doing the right thing," said Waak. "This is about more than one employee's improper conduct. This is about the conduct of our elections, the essence of our democratic process. The Secretary of State is the chief elections officer for Colorado, and as such must be entirely beyond partisanship. The integrity of our democracy doesn't have a dollar figure attached to it. Dan Kopelman should be dismissed immediately."

"Partisanship must end when public policy begins," said Waak. "Coffman's responsibility is to the state, not to his party."
