The Colorado Democratic Party announced today that two counties had submitted
bids for the 2008 Colorado Democratic Assembly and Convention, to be held in
May of 2008.
Bids were submitted to the State Party by both the Broomfield Democrats and
the El Paso County Democrats, and will be reviewed by the State Party's Site
Selection Committee over the next few weeks.
Colorado Democratic Party First Vice Chair Dan Slater, who chairs the Party's
10-member Site Selection Committee, said that the Committee would move relatively
quickly to find a site. "We intend to spend the next few weeks examining
each of the two bids and performing site visits. We hope to have a decision
by mid-June." Slater said that the Party would likely call an Executive
Committee meeting in mid-July to ratify the Site Selection Committee's decision.
Colorado Democratic Party Chair Pat Waak said the bids by Broomfield and El
Paso County reflected the changing atmosphere of politics in Colorado. "We
are very pleased to have such wonderful bids by these two communities. Both
Broomfield and El Paso County represent historically Republican areas where
we have spent a lot of effort organizing campaigns. The fact that our State
Assembly and Convention will be in one of these two communities is a reflection
of the fact that Colorado Democrats will not cede a single county to Republicans
in 2008. We intend to campaign on the ground very aggressively in all 64 of
Colorado's counties."
In 2005, the State Party's site selection process resulted in the selection
of Greeley as the host city for the 2006 Colorado Democratic Assembly. Party
activists attributed that choice as being a catalyst that helped propel traditionally
Republican Weld County into the Bill Ritter column in November.
