Denver, CO - Today Governor Bill Ritter and Congressman Mark Udall called on all Congressional representatives in Washington, including Rep. Marilyn Musgrave, to vote to override the President Bush veto of SCHIP legislation that would renew the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP), which currently provides health care coverage to over 6 million children nationwide, and improve it by expanding coverage for more children in Colorado.
President Bush's veto, if not overridden this week, will prevent 60,000 uninsured children in Colorado from gaining health care. This comes despite overwhelming support of the American people, bipartisan majorities in both houses of Congress and nearly every governor in America. Nation-wide healthcare providers and patient advocates, rural and urban Americans, and citizens of all ages are united in strong support of our nation's children.
In Colorado, Rep. Marilyn Musgrave initially voted against health care for Colorado's children, denying healthcare benefits to thousands of children in her district.
"Musgrave has the opportunity to do the right thing and vote to override the horrendous veto," said Pat Waak, Colorado Democrats. "Musgrave has not been willing to stand up to the Bush Administration, this is her opportunity to put her money where her mouth is and vote to override the veto."
"Musgrave and her predecessor Bob Schaffer, now a candidate for the U.S. Senate, have long been unwilling stand up against the failed policies of the Bush Administration on both foreign and domestic issues," said Waak. "Musgrave and Schaffer claim to be moderates reflecting the values of Americans while ignoring what most Americans care about, basic health care."
Governor Ritter noted that the National Governors Association overwhelmingly supports the legislation, including 16 republican Governors. Governor Ritter and Congressman Udall called upon Representatives Musgrave, Lamborn and Tancredo to support the veto override.
