Pat Waak, Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party today denounced Secretary
of State Mike Coffman’s poor handling of the latest voting machine debacle
calling in to question the 2008 election.
“The Secretary of State is the chief elections officer for all Coloradans
therefore the office can be no less than transparent when dealing with the fundamental
voting rights of every qualified citizen in our state,” said Waak . “There
appears to be a lack of transparency when it comes to Coffman’s ability
to guarantee Coloradans an honest and accurate elections process.” Coffman
failed to consult with County Clerks who oversee local elections before determining
potential solutions.
Secretary of State Coffman recently de-certified voting machines affecting
most of Colorado counties causing local elections officials to scramble for
answers on how to proceed with 2008 elections.
“The publics confidence in the elections process should be of paramount
concern to the office of the Secretary of State” said Waak. Coffman’s
poor history of responding to public concerns and those of the party suggest
a pattern of inability to carry out the responsibilities of the office.”
