Shifty Schaffer's Latest Shuffle: Immigration PDF Print E-mail

Post: Schaffer's "Current Views Are At Odds With More Hard-Line Positions He Has Staked Out in the Past"

DENVER -In his latest attempt to dance away from a record far out of the mainstream for regular Coloradans, Bob Schaffer kept up the Schaffer Shuffle in today's Denver Post, this time on immigration.

In 2002, as a member of Congress, Schaffer called immigration hard-liner Tom Tancredo's Immigration Reform Caucus the "‘only organization in Washington looking at finding balanced, sensible solutions to the country's immigration problem," and said he "isn't worried about a Hispanic backlash in the voting booth. 'I haven't given any thought to that, and I frankly don't care,' Schaffer said. 'If Republicans conclude breaking the law is good for politics, then Republicans deserve to lose.'" [Denver Post 9/20/02]

Three weeks ago, after a poll showing that Coloradans didn't line up with Tancredo and Schaffer's hard-line views, the Schaffer Shuffle began with his campaign spokesman saying "his candidate wasn't yet ready to talk about his immigration stance."

And now the Schaffer Shuffle has picked up speed, with Schaffer trying to look moderate on immigration and running away from his previous record, because "the issue has played less potently for Republican candidates at the national level than many party strategists expected."

One problem for Bob: "[H]is current views are at odds with more hard-line positions he has staked out in the past." [Denver Post, 04/07/08]

"The more Bob Schaffer dances the Schaffer Shuffle, the more Coloradans see that he'll say anything if he thinks it'll get him elected. But the record is clear: he has gone too far, too many times, and he hasn't stood on the side of regular Coloradans on this or any other issue of importance," said Pat Waak, Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party.
