DENVER (AP) - Sen. Ken Salazar and congressmen John Salazar and Mark
Udall are introducing legislation intended to protect wildlife and
environmentally sensitive areas on western Colorado's Roan Plateau
while still allowing energy development there. … The Democrats'
proposal would declare about 39,000 acres on the Roan Plateau too
environmentally sensitive to allow any disturbance of the surface. It
would also require the BLM to offer leasing in phases rather than all
at once.

Republican Rep. Marilyn Musgrave partnered with Democratic Rep. Mark
Udall on Thursday to call for immediate reform to congressional
earmarks by taking a self-imposed one-year moratorium on the
process….“The process for securing earmarks has been improved under
Democratic leadership, but not enough to convince the American people
that Congress is seriously cleaning house and reducing unnecessary
spending,” Udall said. “This problem affects all Americans, and it will
require a bipartisan commitment to fix it.”

The Democrat out-raised GOP foe Bob Schaffer despite a Bush appearance in January.
Democrat Mark Udall continued to out-raise Republican opponent Bob
Schaffer during the first quarter of the year, netting $1.45 million to
Schaffer's $1.02 million.
Former Congressman Bob Schaffer continues to make news for his support
of jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff and promoting a guest worker program
that has led to forced abortions, forced prostitution and worker
exploitation.
After a week of front-page stories in the Denver Post linking Bob
Schaffer to jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff, the details of Schaffer
supporting Jack Abramoff and his clients continue to come out. Even a
former Colorado Republican Party Chair has come out blasting Schaffer
for turning a blind eye to the forced abortions on the Island.
Denver Post: Right to Life blasts Schaffer

An anti-abortion group is blasting Bob Schaffer, Republican candidate
for a Colorado U.S. Senate seat, over his defense of human rights
conditions in the Northern Mariana Islands, an American territory where
allegations that factory workers must undergo forced abortions are
common. Colorado Right to Life accused Schaffer of closing his eyes to
reports from Chinese workers on the islands about forced abortions.
"The pro-life movement will no longer give a pass to candidates like
Bob Schaffer who look the other way when Chinese women are forced to
abort their children," said Steve Curtis, spokesman for the group and
former chairman of the Colorado Republican Party.
TPM: In 2000 Hearing, Schaffer Executed Abramoff Lobbying Strategy -- Again

Add this to the growing catalog of former U.S. Rep. Bob Schaffer's
actions on behalf of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands
(CNMI), Jack Abramoff's longtime client. In a July 2000 House resources
committee hearing, Schaffer -- now a GOP candidate for U.S. senator
from Colorado -- took the lead in interrogating two officials from the
Interior Department's Office of Insular Affairs about alleged political
activities on the job. … "We intend to use the hearings to impeach
Stayman and his campaign against the CNMI," Abramoff wrote in a 1998
memo to Willie Tan, a garment manufacturing mogul who operated a number
of plants on the islands. The Office of Insular Affairs, "led by
Stayman, has been the main source of difficulty for the CNMI," the memo
said….Schaffer had enthusiastically enacted Abramoff's strategy in a
1999 hearing. Schaffer charged that Office of Internal Affairs
officials had secretly paid laborers to participate in a protest
against conditions on the islands when the Abramoff-organized
Congressional delegation (including Schaffer) arrived.
Denver Post: Schaffer twice endorsed Abramoff ally

At two key moments in the political life of Benigno Fitial — governor
of the Northern Mariana Islands and a powerful former ally of
now-jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff — then-Congressman Bob Schaffer was
among several Republican U.S lawmakers who stepped in to lend their
support, according to a copy of advertisements posted on a national
blog and another obtained by The Denver Post.

DENVER — Senate candidate Bob Schaffer traveled to an American
protectorate in the Pacific in 1999 on a trip arranged in part by the
firm of now-jailed lobbyist Jack Abramoff, The Denver Post reported
Thursday. Schaffer, a Republican, was a congressman from Colorado’s 4th
District when he went to the Northern Mariana Islands to look into
allegations of labor abuse. The $13,000 trip was paid for by the
Traditional Values Coalition and travel was arranged by Abramoff’s
firm, Preston-Gates, the newspaper said.
