EDITORIAL: “Predictably, Colorado GOP Sen. Cory Gardner Has So Far Been Silent” On Trump’s Corrupt Cronyism

“Gardner only highlighted his own complicity and unshakable fidelity to Trump, ignoring this ultimate act of corruption”

Op-ed: “Gardner has become a meek enabler of the corruption and abuse of power that have come to characterize today’s Republicans”

Denver, CO – Today, the Colorado Sentinel published a scathing editorial calling out Senator Cory Gardner’s silence on Trump’s blatant cronyism and corruption: “Predictably, Colorado GOP Sen. Cory Gardner has so far been silent to Trump’s coup de grace. It’s a pattern Gardner has adopted as policy: Avoid rebuking the president in exchange for Trump’s support and that of his fans.”

While other prominent Republicans have denounced President Trump’s “historic corruption” for commuting the prison sentence of his ally Roger Stone — who was convicted of lying to prosecutors to protect the president — Gardner has been deafeningly silent. When Stone was sentenced in February, Gardner also “avoided questions” and even ran away from a CNN reporter who asked if he was concerned about political interference.

The Sentinel editorial board writes that “despite a mountain of reasons begging for rebuke by members of Congress” for the “stunning act of corruption,” Gardner instead, “only highlighted his own complicity and unshakable fidelity to Trump, ignoring this ultimate act of corruption.”

Over the weekend, a former Republican member of Congress also called out Gardner in a column for the Colorado Sun: “A fellow Republican asks — where did Cory Gardner’s integrity go?”

EDITORIAL: Trump’s corrupt Roger Stone scheme cannot go unanswered by Cory Gardner, GOP

By Sentinel Editorial Board | July 13, 2020

It was a prominent Republican over the weekend who most accurately summed up the international revulsion toward one of the world’s most dishonest and repugnant leaders, President Donald Trump.

“Unprecedented, historic corruption: An American president commutes the sentence of a person convicted by a jury of lying to shield that very president,” Utah GOP Sen. Mitch Romney said in a tweet on Saturday.

He was, however, among the very few congressional Republicans with the integrity and temerity to stand up to Trump.

Predictably, Colorado GOP Sen. Cory Gardner has so far been silent to Trump’s coup de grace. It’s a pattern Gardner has adopted as policy: Avoid rebuking the president in exchange for Trump’s support and that of his fans. It’s anathema to what we need to protect the nation from this president.

Over the weekend, issuing more in a serious diversionary social media posts on his “bipartisan” achievements, Gardner only highlighted his own complicity and unshakable fidelity to Trump, ignoring this ultimate act of corruption.

. . .

It would seem nearly impossible for this president to make worse the sordid reputation he has destroyed with his flagrant racism, constant lying, spectacular malfeasance in handling the COVID-19 pandemic and all matters of foreign policy.

While Trump regularly disappoints, he never fails to surprise.

Despite a mountain of reasons begging for rebuke by members of Congress, the public and, ultimately, voters, this single stunning act of corruption cannot be allowed to just fade into all the rest.

. . .

Predictably, Trump tweeted out a lie in his own defense.

“Roger Stone was targeted by an illegal Witch Hunt that never should have taken place,” Trump tweeted. “It is the other side that are criminals, including Biden and Obama, who spied on my campaign – AND GOT CAUGHT!”

There is no evidence to any of the claims.

The allegations were so beyond the pale that former FBI Director and Russia scandal prosecutor Robert Mueller issued a rare scathing opinion in the Washington Post on Saturday.

“Stone was prosecuted and convicted because he committed federal crimes,” Mueller wrote. “He remains a convicted felon, and rightly so.”

Now, the nation looks to Congress to protect us from Trump, arguably the most corrupt man to hold the office of president. Besides Romney and smattering of Congressional Republicans courageous enough to draw Trump’s wrath at criticism, elected members of the GOP have chosen, again, to become silently complicit.

. . .

Even in the midst of debilitating partisanship and polarization, congressional Democrats and Republicans, and voters of every stripe must draw a line with Trump and this dangerous scam. The nation must suffer Trump’s presidency for almost six more months. Polls showing clearly that Americans have finally had enough.

Collectively, we must signal that we will protect the interests of the nation from Trump and his cronies as his term nears its end. Gardner should start the chorus.

Opinion: A fellow Republican asks — where did Cory Gardner’s integrity go?

By Former U.S. GOP Rep. Claudine Schneider | July 12, 2020

. . .

For example, when he was campaigning for office in 2014, Colorado Republican Sen. Cory Gardner made a vow to Colorado’s voters to be independent and act with integrity.

He said, “When my party is wrong, I’ll say it. When something is broken, I’ll fix it!”

Cory Gardner has not said anything, nor has he fixed anything in his six years in the Senate.

Rather, Gardner has become a meek enabler of the corruption and abuse of power that have come to characterize today’s Republicans.

Gardner has sacrificed many other principles during his time in the Senate. Here are a few more examples:

  • Gardner strongly supports Trump’s continued efforts to kill the Affordable Care Act, which protects against pre-existing conditions. This, along with expanded Medicaid coverage made possible by the ACA, provides health care for nearly a million residents of Colorado. A Supreme Court decision on the Trump case to kill the ACA is due after the election.
  • Gardner defends federal negligence in fighting the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed more than 130,000 Americans and shows little sign of slowing down, as compared with other countries that have managed to bring it largely under control.
  • Gardner was silent when news broke that Russia was paying bounties to Afghan Taliban fighters to hunt and kill American soldiers!
    • Apparently Gardner was waiting for his “talking points” from Donald Trump!

As a member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Gardner should be defending America’s national security, American soldiers’ lives and Colorado’s interests.

Instead, Gardner is too busy making excuses for Trump.

Despite Gardner’s claims of bipartisanship, we know he votes for Trump’s agenda 88.9% of the time. Pay attention to words vs. actions! Check the non-partisan www.VoteSmart.org for the facts.

Where did Gardner’s integrity go? When will he say his party is wrong on DACA? When will he attempt to fix it?

. . .
