Gardner Slammed for Dodging Questions On Trump — Again
Denver, CO – Yesterday, Senator Cory Gardner dodged reporter questions and refused to hold President Trump accountable after he “baselessly alleged that a 75-year-old protester who was hospitalized after Buffalo police shoved him actually was faking some of his fall.” Gardner is known for “avoid[ing] the press” and has been with Trump “100%” despite promising voters that he would stand up to his party.
Gardner has continually refused to call out Trump, despite not voting for him in 2016. When peaceful protesters were tear-gassed and dispersed with rubber bullets and flash bangs for Trump to stage a political photo op last week, Gardner wouldn’t “criticize Trump directly.” Gardner has been deafeningly silent as Trump has slung racist tweets and has repeatedly refused to answer questions on Trump’s controversial rhetoric.
Here’s what they’re saying about No Comment Cory’s latest dodge:
Politico: “Sens. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) and John Cornyn (R-Texas) declined to comment on the tweet, saying they hadn’t read it. When asked whether they wanted to see the tweet, both showed little interest.”
CNN: “Colorado GOP Sen. Cory Gardner told reporters on Capitol Hill that he had not seen the tweet and “didn’t want to look at it,” according to Politico’s Burgess Everett. (Everett had the Trump tweet printed out, offering to allow any senator who claimed to not have seen it the opportunity to read it and then comment on it.)”
Washington Post: “But even with all that, to ditch Trump now would be a futile effort for most Senate Republicans. Who are they going to win over? … Sen. Gardner has not seen the tweet and didn’t want to look at it. Says he’s focused on his outdoors bill on the Senate floor and was in a rush to get up there.”
Business Insider: “Several Republican senators who were asked about the tweet said they hadn’t seen it and refused to weigh in even when told what was in the tweet. … Colorado Sen. Cory Gardner told Politico he hadn’t seen the tweet and did not want to look at it.”
The Week: “Sen. Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) was asked about the tweet Tuesday, but said he hadn’t seen it and wasn’t planning to, saying he is instead focused on a bill he’s bringing to the Senate floor.”
Salon: “Republican lawmakers who typically rush to defend the president tripped over themselves trying to dodge reporters. … Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., refused to even look at the tweet when confronted by reporters.”
