Gardner Votes to Promote Vocal Opponent of ACA to Second Highest Court in the U.S.
Gardner and GOP Continue to “Plow Forward” To Gut ACA, “Pandemic Be Damned”
Denver, CO – Today Senator Cory Gardner voted to promote vocal opponent of the Affordable Care Act and Mitch McConnell’s “protégé” and family friend, Justin Walker, to the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals — known as the second highest court in the country. Walker was deemed “not qualified” by the American Bar Association for his current position and has called the Supreme Court opinion upholding the ACA “indefensible” and “catastrophic,” putting the lifesaving law in further jeopardy.
Gardner first voted for Walker to a lower court last fall, and he hadn’t even served a full year before President Trump and McConnell decided to promote him.
Gardner, dubbed “Mitch McConnell’s right-hand man,” has worked in lockstep with his party boss to confirm political ideologues and repeal the ACA. Gardner has voted at least 13 times to repeal, gut, or defund the ACA, which could rip care away from 400,000 Coloradans, endanger protections for 2.4 million Coloradans with pre-existing conditions, and undermine the nation’s public health response to coronavirus. When Congress failed to repeal the health care law three years ago, Gardner despaired that “donors are furious…we haven’t kept our promise” and helped lead efforts to pass the GOP tax scam, which sparked the current legal challenge.
Gardner says he believes the ACA is “unconstitutional” and supports the lawsuit to overturn the law, which is before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Colorado Democratic Party spokesperson Eli Rosen:
“While the ACA ensures hundreds of thousands of Coloradans have access to health care coverage — especially during a global pandemic — Senator Gardner continues his crusade to repeal the law. Gardner’s support for Walker shows that he is more concerned about appeasing McConnell and ripping care from Coloradans than serving the people of Colorado.”
