Will Gardner Stand Up to Trump As He Renews Attacks on DREAMers?
Gardner Has Voted to Gut DACA, Silent as Trump Crusades to End Program
Denver, CO – As President Trump renews his reckless attacks on the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, Senator Cory Gardner has refused to stand up to Trump’s crusade to end the program, which risks deportation protections for 15,000 in Colorado. Gardner, who has voted multiple times himself to gut DACA, flipped his stance on the House-passed Dream and Promise Act after the Supreme Court ruling last week, just in time to try to salvage his struggling reelection campaign.
But Gardner has done nothing to stand up to Trump or push Mitch McConnell to actually take up the legislation, which has been stuck in the GOP Senate for over a year. Gardner’s inconsistent record includes staunchly opposing a bipartisan 2013 comprehensive immigration reform bill, decrying it as “amnesty for illegal immigrants.” On brand with his refusal to host a public town for nearly three years, Gardner has refused to meet with immigration activists and even “kicked [immigrant] community leaders out of public meetings.”
Colorado Democratic Party spokesperson Eli Rosen:
“Senator Gardner is willfully standing with President Trump as he threatens protections for 15,000 Colorado DREAMers against deportation from the only home they’ve ever known — his silence is complicity. Colorado needs a fighter for our families, not one who plays politics with people’s lives and defends the president’s reckless agenda at our communities’ expense.”
