Colorado Dems Applaud House Dems Move to Protect Abortion Rights
Denver, CO -- This afternoon, Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced that the House would take up the Women’s Health Protection Act, legislation that would codify Roe V. Wade protections for reproductive freedom into law. This is in direct response to the Supreme Court’s 5-4 decision by conservative justices to allow Texas’ extreme abortion ban (Senate Bill 8) to go into effect.
Colorado’s Democratic Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper are cosponsors of the Senate bill, and Colorado’s Democratic House members Diana DeGette, Joe Neguse, Jason Crow, and Ed Perlmutter are cosponsors of the House bill.
Halisi Vinson, Colorado Democratic Party Executive Director:
“Let’s be clear -- Colorado is a pro-choice state. Colorado voters across the spectrum have rejected four attempts to ban abortion over the past 13 years, yet we’re seeing Colorado Republicans like their state party chair and some of their senate candidates cheering on the cruelest, most restrictive law to criminalize reproductive rights that we have seen in decades; that may very well have mortal consequences. Bodily autonomy and reproductive freedom are Colorado values, and I applaud Speaker Pelosi for taking swift action to protect those values for all people across our country.”
