DENVER - The Colorado Democratic Party is excited to announce that the applications to run for Delegate to the Democratic National Convention, Presidential Elector and Democratic Committee Member are available on our website.

The Colorado Democratic Party is thrilled to announce the upcoming Colorado Democratic Party State Assembly & Convention, set to take place virtually on April 13, 2024. Colorado Democrats will elect 2,000 delegates to the State Assembly to nominate the Party’s candidate for CU Regent At-Large, and 2,000 delegates to the State Convention to elect the At-large, PLEO and alternate DNC Delegates who will go to the Chicago DNC Convention to nominate the Democratic Presidential Candidate.

Shad Murib, Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party, stated, "The Colorado Democratic Party State Assembly & Convention is not just a political event; it is a celebration of democracy in action. It is a reflection of our commitment to a brighter future, where our government serves the interests of all its citizens. It is a testament to the power of individuals coming together for a common cause and we invite every Democrat, no matter your background, experience, or zip code, to participate in this important and historic event."

“The Democratic Party is only as strong as those who are able to participate, and we are excited to open the doors of participation to every Coloradan,” said Indira Duggirala, First Vice Chair of the Colorado Democratic Party. “We look forward to running an historic outreach program focused on growing our ranks and building a bench for future leadership.”

“This is a great opportunity for Coloradans of all backgrounds to take a leadership role in our party. Whether you’ve been a long-time Democrat or are brand new, you’re welcome to join us by representing your community in helping us pick our candidates, write our platform, and decide the future of our great state,” said State Senator James Coleman.

This event serves as a pivotal moment for Colorado Democrats to unite, engage in the democratic process, and help shape the future of our nation.

Key Dates for Quick Reference:

The first step in the caucus process is for Democrats or interested voters not currently registered with the Democratic Party to register with the Party by February 12, 2024. Following Colorado’s presidential primary on March 5, 2024, Super Tuesday, the county caucuses will be scheduled to occur between March 5th and March 9th, 2024.

County precinct caucuses provide individuals with the opportunity to run as delegates for their preferred state candidates, and as national delegates who will nominate the Democratic presidential candidate at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago during the week of August 19th, 2024. Detailed information on the dates, locations, and procedures for county precinct caucuses will be regularly updated on the Colorado Democratic Party’s website as the schedule is finalized.

Following the county precinct caucuses, delegates emerging from these caucuses will proceed to county assemblies and conventions, Congressional District assemblies and conventions, State House, State Senate, and Judicial District assemblies, and ultimately, the State Assembly & Convention. The dates of these events are listed in the table included in this release based on which path they choose.

Colorado Democrats will have 87 national delegates representing our state at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago.

The breakdown of those delegates is as follows:

  • 47 national delegates chosen at the Congressional District conventions

  • 16 At-Large national delegates elected by the 2,000 state convention delegates

    • 6 alternates for these delegates will also be elected

  • 15 Automatic members

    • Governor Jared Polis

    • Senator Michael Bennet

    • Senator John Hickenlooper

    • Rep. Yadira Caraveo

    • Rep. Jason Crow

    • Rep. Diana DeGette

    • Rep. Joe Neguse

    • Rep. Brittany Pettersen

    • CDP Chair Shad Murib

    • CDP 1st Vice Chair Indira Duggirala

    • 3 elected DNC Members

    • Secretary of State Jena Griswold

    • Governor & Former DNC Chair Roy Romer

  • 9 Party Leader & Elected Official delegates elected by the 2,000 state convention delegates

Furthermore, individuals have the unique chance to run for one of three available positions representing Colorado at the Democratic National Committee (DNC). The DNC plays a pivotal role in shaping the Democratic Party's policies and strategies. Those passionate about the direction of the party and the nation are encouraged to consider running for this influential position.

Statements of candidacy forms for all elected national delegates, as well as for DNC member candidates, can be accessed on the Colorado Democratic Party's website starting January 8th, 2024, and are due to the party by March 18th, 2024.

One notable feature of the State Assembly & Convention is the virtual format, which promotes broader participation from every corner of the state. This inclusivity ensures that every Colorado Democrat, regardless of location, can have their say in shaping the Democratic Party's future and the future of our nation.

A fully virtual assembly and convention creates equity in this process by:

  • Eliminating the “rural tax” of participation such as hotel rooms, bad weather, gas, and time off from work — difficult challenges and expenses intensely leveraged on Democrats in rural areas to participate.

  • Providing access for Coloradans of all abilities to participate in the same way,

  • Allowing working folks to participate without having to take additional time off.

  • Encouraging youth participation.

Counties may administer their conventions and assemblies virtually, in-person, or hybrid.
